Astronomers probe 'sandbar' between islands of galaxies

Astronomers have caught sight of an unusual galaxy that has illuminated new details about a celestial "sandbar" connecting two massive islands of galaxies. The research was conducted in part with NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. These "sandbars," or filaments, are known to span vast distances between galaxy clusters and form a lattice-like structure known as the cosmic web.

Cosmos may show echoes of events before Big Bang

Evidence of events that happened before the Big Bang can be seen in the glow of microwave radiation that fills the Universe, scientists have asserted. Renowned cosmologist Roger Penrose said that analysis of this cosmic microwave background showed echoes of previous Big Bang-like events. The events appear as "rings" around galaxy clusters in which the variation in the background is unusually low.

Tuning an ear to the music of gravitational waves

A team of scientists and engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has brought the world one step closer to "hearing" gravitational waves – ripples in space and time predicted by Einstein in the early 20th century. The research, performed in a lab at JPL in Pasadena, Calif., tested a system of lasers that would fly aboard the proposed space mission called Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, or LISA.

Saturn's moon Rhea has thin atmosphere

Rhea, the second biggest moon of Saturn, has an atmosphere of oxygen and carbon dioxide, scientists say. It is incredibly thin, however. The density of oxygen, for example, is probably about five trillion times less dense than the oxygen that blankets Earth. The presence of an exosphere, as it is more properly called, was confirmed by instruments on the Cassini probe which orbits the ringed planet and its moons.

Andromeda Galaxy
Andromeda 'born in a collision'

The nearest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way – Andromeda – was born when two smaller galaxies collided, say astronomers. An international team conducted a computer simulation of how Andromeda evolved over time. The results suggest that two galaxies collided some nine billion years ago and permanently fused about 5.5 billion years ago.

Dark energy and flat Universe exposed by simple method

Researchers have developed a simple technique that adds evidence to the theory that the Universe is flat. Moreover, the method – developed by revisiting a 30-year-old idea – confirms that dark energy makes up nearly three-quarters of the Universe. The research, published in Nature, uses existing data and relies on fewer assumptions than current approaches.

Hardy bugs could survive a million years on Mars

It was already nicknamed "Conan the Bacterium" for its ability to withstand radiation. Now it seems Deinococcus radiodurans could, in theory, survive dormant on Mars for over a million years.

Spitzer reveals a buried explosion sparked by a galactic train wreck

Astronomers using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope have found a stunning burst of star formation that beams out as much infrared light as an entire galaxy. The collision of two spiral galaxies has triggered this explosion, which is cloaked by dust that renders its stars nearly invisible in other wavelengths of light.

Delta 4 Heavy launch vehicle
'Eavesdropper' satellite rides huge rocket from Florida

The US National Reconnaissance Office has launched what is reputed to be the largest satellite ever sent into space. The spacecraft was put into orbit on a Delta-4 Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force station on Sunday. The NRO gave no details about the payload but it is understood the satellite will be used to eavesdrop on enemy communications.
