Curiosity soil sample
A little bit of Hawaii on the Red Planet?

Having grabbed its first sample of Martian soil, NASA's Curiosity rover has done an analysis on the soil and found it to be similar in composition to the basalt-rich sands of the Hawaiian islands. The Martian material seems to be a mixture of wind-borne particles carried from far away together with grains of more local provenance.
