On this day in 1976 Viking 2 landed on Mars and sent back its first pictures from the surface. Along with its sister craft it sent back fascinating data in the search for life on the Red Planet – data which, in their entirety, have never been fully explained. Which makes Curiosity's mission that much more fascinating.

Merging clusters in the Tarantula Nebula
Inside the Tarantula, two star clusters collide

In one of the largest star-forming regions known – the Tarantula Nebula (30 Doradus) in the Large Magellanic Cloud – two clusters appear to be colliding, stretching one of them out of shape and tossing some stars out of the nebula altogether. This nearby example of cluster interaction could prove useful in understanding how star clusters may have formed in the early universe.
