U.S. pilot was ordered to shoot down UFO

Two U.S. fighter planes were scrambled and ordered to shoot down an
unidentified flying object (UFO) over the English countryside during
the Cold War, according to secret files made public on Monday. One
pilot said he was seconds away from firing 24 rockets at the object,
which moved erratically and gave a radar reading like "a flying aircraft

Mysterious 'dead water' effect caught on
film

In 1893, Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen and his ship Fram were
victims of a strange phenomenon as he sailed past the Nordenskiöld
Archipelago, north of Siberia. Nansen wrote afterwards: "Fram appeared
to be held back, as if by some mysterious force, and she did not always
answer the helm ... We made loops in our course, turned sometimes
right around, tried all sorts of antics to get clear of it, but to

Airliner had near miss with UFO

A passenger jet bound for Heathrow Airport had a near miss with a
UFO, Ministry of Defence files reveal. The captain of the Alitalia
airliner shouted "Look out" to his co-pilot at the sight of a brown
missile-shaped object shooting past them overhead. Civil Aviation
Authority and military investigations could not explain the 1991 incident
near Lydd in Kent. Read

'Yeti hairs' belong to a goat

Scientists in the US who have examined hairs claimed to belong to
a yeti in India say that in fact they belong to a species of Himalayan
goat. They say that DNA tests on the hairs – obtained from the
north-east Indian state of Meghalaya – show that they are from
a goat known as a Himalayan Goral. The rough-haired creature has a
grey-brown coat and is between 95-130cm (37-51in) in length.

Massive diamond found in Lesotho

Miners in Lesotho have discovered a huge gem stone which may become
the largest ever polished round diamond. The stone weighs 478 carats
and is the 20th largest rough diamond ever found, said Gem Diamonds.
The company said the uncut rock was recovered recently from the Letseng
mine, owned by the company in Lesotho. Read

Is it possible to have an 'out-of-body' experience?

Floating above one's body or travelling down a long tunnel leading
to a white light has become such a clichéd description of near-death
experiences that many remain deeply suspicious of them. And yet time
and again people from different walks of life have described the same
scenario. A coalition of British and US scientists has launched an
experiment to study more than 1,500 heart attack patients over the
next three years to see if people with no heartbeat and brain activity
can have genuine "out-of-body" experiences. Read

'Ant from Mars' found in Amazon jungle

A unique, blind, subterranean, predatory ant has been discovered in
the Amazon rainforest. On first sight, legend of evolutionary biology
and ant expert Edward O Wilson of Harvard University quipped that
it was so unusual that it must have come from Mars. Unfortunately,
the specimens dried up and crumbled before they could be formally

New clues to mystery sea monster

Fresh clues have been found to help a scientist in her efforts to
identify a mystery creature found on Orkney. Geneticist Dr Yvonne
Simpson has researched the Stronsay Beast and will reveal her latest
discoveries at the Orkney International Science Festival. The creature's
carcass, which some said was that of a basking shark (like the one
shown here), was found off Stronsay in 1808. Read
