Aryabhata (satellite)
India's first satellite, named for the Indian mathematician Aryabhata
(c. AD 450). The Soviet Union provided the launch
vehicle and assisted India in developing Aryabhata, which carried out satellite
technology tests and made observations of the upper atmosphere.
