Athena



A package of six instruments carried aboard the Mars Exploration Rovers. Athena includes (1) Pancam, a panoramic camera with a resolution almost four times that of cameras on Mars Pathfinder; (2) Mini-TES, or the Mini-Thermal Emission Spectrometer, for observing infrared emission from rocks; (3) APXS, or the Alpha-Proton-X-ray Spectrometer, for analysis of chemical composition; (4) the Mössbauer Spectrometer, for determining the composition of iron-bearing minerals; (5) the Microscopic Imager, for close-up examination of samples; and (6) the Mini-Corer and Sample Container.
