adder

The adder is the only poisonous snake found in Britain. It lives usually in woods and on heaths and is not nearly as common as the common grass snake. You can recognise the adder by the zig-zag dark line along its back. In Scotland it extends much further north than the grass snake, and on the European continent it is even found just within the Arctic Circle.
