annual (plant) A plant that completes its life cycle, from seed germination to seed production, followed by death, within a single growing season. Examples include sweet pea, sunflower, cereals, peas, and tomatoes. Annuals overwinter as seeds. Preventing seeding may convert an annual, e.g., mignonette, to a biennial or a perennial.
