anthraquinone



A yellow crystalline quinone made from anthracene or by condensation of benzene and pthalic anhydride (see acid anhydride). It is the parent of numerous dyes of all colors, which are bright, fast, and suitable for synthetic fibers; they included alizarin and cochineal.
