biosphere
That part of the Earth and atmosphere capable of supporting living organisms. It forms a thin layer around the Earth, including the surface of the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, and the lower atmosphere. The biosphere is self-sufficient except for energy and extends a few kilometers above and below sea-level.
