intergalactic bridge

A stream of matter connecting two interacting galaxies that have passed close to one another. Material is torn from one galaxy, funnels down onto the other, is compressed, and often gives rise to a starburst – a sudden spate of star formation. One of the most dramatic examples is seen in the Antennae.
