bruise

Also called a contusion, a lesion of the skin accompanied by discoloration, usually caused by a blow, in which capillary damage allows blood to leak into the dermis where it is slowly broken down and absorbed. A hematoma, a larger blood-filled cavity, may require draining. Bruising without injury may indicate blood disease.
