Also called butylene, any of three alkene gases (alkenes are a type of hydrocarbon) having the general formula C4H8: butene-1 (CH3CH2CH=CH2), butene-2 (CH2CH=CHCH3), and isobutene ([CH3]2C=CH2) or 2-methyl-propene. Butene is made from petroleum and used as a starting material for other organic compounds.
