Cuvier, Georges Léopold Chrétien Frédéric
Dagobert (1769–1832)
French comparative anatomist and the founder of paleontology. By applying
his theory of the "correlation of parts" he was able to reconstruct the
forms of many fossil creatures, explaining their creation and subsequent
extinction according to the doctrine of catastrophism. A tireless laborer
in the service of French Protestant education, Cuvier was perhaps the most
renowned and respected French scientist in the early 19th century.
