carbonic acid
(H2CO3). An extremely weak acid formed when carbon dioxide (CO2) dissolves in water. It forms two series of salts, carbonates and bicarbonates (hydrogen carbonates). Carbonates are of great importance in nature both in rock formations and in the shells of various animals.
