carcinogen




An external substance or agent that causes cancer, including chemicals, radiation, and some viruses. Many different chemical carcinogens have been found to cause cancer in animals, but more research is needed to confirm their ability to cause cancer in humans. Tobacco smoke causes lung cancer because of carcinogenic hydrocarbons.
