A series of interlocking links forming a flexible cable. Simple chains are used in, for example, haulage and hoisting. Roller chains are used in power transmission (as on a bicycle): here the links of an endless chain mesh with the teeth of toothed wheels called sprockets. Efficiency may be as high as 99%.
