chlorate




A salt of chloric acid, containing the ion ClO3-. Chlorate salts are good oxidizing agents and are a useful source of oxygen, which they give off when heated. Sodium and potassium chlorates are used in explosives and also as weedkillers. They are manufactured by electrolysis.
