colic

Intermittent pain; generally experienced as bouts of severe pain with pain-free intervals. Colic is due to irritation or obstruction of hollow viscera, in particular the gastrointestinal tract, ureter, and gall bladder or bile ducts. Treatment of the cause is supplemented by analgesics and drugs to reduce smooth muscle spasm.
