conceptualismA modern term describing a position in scholastic philosophy with respect to the status of universals (general concepts such as chair-ness) that was intermediate between the extremes of nominalism and realism. To a conceptualist, universals indeed exist, but only as concepts common to all human minds and not as things in the world particular objects (such as chairs).
