convulsion

A convulsion is a series of violent, involuntary contractions of the muscles, sometimes accompanied by loss of consciousness. Such a seizure may indicate epilepsy. However, isolated seizures can arise from many other causes, including intoxication, brain abscess, or an abnormally low blood-sugar level (hypoglycemia). Young children may suffer febrile seizures, brought on by high fever.
