Daimler, Gottlieb (1834–1900)

German engineer and automobile manufacturer. In 1822, with Wilhelm Maybach, Daimler established a research laboratory where a year later they developed a lightweight petrol internal combustion engine. Daimler used this to power a motorcycle and then his first car (1886). In 1890 he founded the Daimler Motor Company, which made Mercedes cars, and in 1926 became Daimler-Benz and Company.
