Darwin, Erasmus (1731–1802)
English physician, philosopher, scientist, and poet who proposed a theory
of evolution by the inheritance of acquired
characteristics in his Zoonomia of 1794–96. Perhaps the foremost
physician of his day, he was a leading member of the Lunar Society of Birmingham.
Charles Darwin was his grandson.
