diagenesis

The physical and chemical processes whereby sediments are gradually transformed into solid rock, usually at low pressure and temperature. Pressure results in compaction, forcing grains together and eliminating air and water, and cementation binds individual particles together by the precipitation of a secondary mineral, commonly an iron oxide, calcite, or silica.
