diffraction pattern



In general, the interference pattern that results when diffracted waves are superposed. In astronomy, the image of a star formed by an optically perfect telescope. In a refractor, this consists of a small bright disk surrounded by concentric rings of light; in a reflector, the disk will have (typically) four spikes caused by diffraction from the secondary mirror supports.
