direction finder

A device used to locate the direction of an incoming radio signal. Usually a loop antenna is rotated until maximum reception strength is achieved, giving the line of the transmission. If this is repeated from a different position, the transmitting station may be located. The radiocompass used in air and sea navigation is a direction finder: position is determined by finding the directions of two or more transmitters.
