electrolyte A nonmetallic (liquid or solid) conductor that carries current by the movement of ions (instead of electrons) with the liberation of matter at the electrodes of an electrochemical cell. Sulfuric acid, for example, is the electrolyte used in car batteries. Seawater is the commonest natural electrolyte in the world, and by suspending a zinc and a steel sheet in it, a little electricity can be produced.
