electrostatic precipitatorA device consisting of a number of vertical, parallel metal plates which can remove solid (dust or ash) or liquid particles from gases. It is capable of cleaning dirty ventilating air or removing tar or dust from the smoke of coal-burning plants. An electrical discharge is produced in the gas and the electrons released collide with the suspended particles carrying them toward the anode, where they accumulate for periodic removal.
