electroluminscence



The emission of light from some phosphors (particularly zinc sulfide, ZnS) and semiconductors under the influence of an applied electric field. Electrophotoluminscent screens (in which the effect is photon activated) are used medically to intensify X-ray pictures. See also luminescence.
