The length of the hypotenuse of the smallest Pythagorean triangle (a right triangle having integral sides). Five is the only prime number that is a member of two pairs of twin primes. Every integer is the sum of five positive or negative cubes in an infinite number of ways. Five is the smallest degree of a polynomial equation for which there is no general formula for the solutions (see quintic).
