Gatewood, George D. (1940–)
Director of the Allegheny Observatory
since 1977 and chairman of the Extrasolar
Planetary Foundation. Gatewood specializes in high-precision astrometry
aimed at detecting extrasolar planets
around nearby stars. He designed and built the Multichannel
Astrometric Photometer which was used in the discovery (yet to be confirmed)
of a planetary system around Lalande 21185.
