A gauge boson is any of the particles that carry the forces of the Standard Model. They include the photon for electromagnetism, W and Z-bosons for the weak force, gluons for the strong force, and the graviton for gravity. A gauge boson is any particle whose existence is demanded by a principle of gauge invariance.
