  1. (BIOLOGY) A structure or organ that has the same evolutionary origin as an apparently different structure in another species. For instance, there is little apparent similarity between a horse's leg and a whale's flipper, but both have similar evolutionary history.

  2. (CHEMISTRY) A member of an homologous series.
