Hydration is the assimilation of water by an ion or compound. A hydrate is a compound, such as copper (II) sulfate (cupric sulfate) that has a fixed amount of water weakly bonded to each crystal (CuSO₄.5H₂O). Ethene can be hydrated to produce ethanol.
