An inlier is an area of old rocks surrounded by younger ones. The old rocks may have resisted erosion, and stand as hills above the surrounding eroded area. Alternatively, the upper and outer rocks of an anticline may have been eroded, leaving the older, once lower rocks surrounded by younger ones.
