ipecac



A drug produced from the dried stems and roots of Cephalaelis ipecacuanha and C. acuminala, plants native to South America, but also cultivated in Malaysia. The drug is used an emetic and to treat amebic dysentery, its medicinal properties being due to the alkaloids, emetine, cephaeline, and psychtrine.
