Kurchatov, Igor (1903–1960)



Soviet nuclear scientist who was in charge of all nuclear research (aimed primarily at developing an atomic bomb as quickly as possible) in the Soviet Union from 1943 until his death. The Atomic Energy Institute in Moscow, which he founded, is named after him, as, unofficially, was element 104 – kurchatovium (known officially as rutherfordium).
