launch pad (1) In a restricted sense, the load-bearing base or platform from which a rocket vehicle is launched. This is sometimes called the launch pedestal. (2) More generally, the area from which a rocket vehicle is fired, including all the necessary support facilities, such as the service tower, safety equipment, and cooling water and flame detectors. Often called simply a pad.
