Maupertuis, Pierre Louis Moreau de (1698–1759)



French mathematician and astronomer who showed the Earth to be flattened at the poles (1738), and who formulated the principle of least action, which assumes that, in nature, phenomena such as the motion of bodies occur with maximum economy.
