magnetostriction
The interaction between the physical dimensions of a ferromagnetic specimen and its magnetization (see ferromagnetism). A long iron rod, for example, contracts slightly in a magnetic field. Magnetization by mechanical strain is exploited in high-frequency vibration detectors.
