A resinous exudate obtained from the lentisk pistache (Pistacia lentiscus), which is an evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region. Mastic was used by the ancient Egyptians for embalming and is now used in varnish, as a theatrical fixative and for temporary teeth.
