mesothelium A layer of flattened cells. Mesothelium is like a simple squamous epithelium in appearance and is derived from the mesoderm. It lines the coelomic cavities of vertebrates, including the pericardium, pleura, and peritoneum, and some other spaces, such as the synovial sacs.
