mule

A term now commonly used to describe infertile hybrids between various species. The name is properly restricted to the offspring of a male donkey and a mare. Mules have the shape and size of a horse, and the long ears and small hooves of a donkey. They are favored for their endurance and surefootedness as draft or pack animals.
