nautical mile

A unit used to measure distances at sea. It is defined as the length of one minute of arc of the Earth's circumference. The international nautical mile is equal to 1,852m (6,076.04ft), but in the UK it is defined as 6,080ft (1,853.18m). A speed of one nautical mile per hour is called a knot, a term used both at sea and for flying.
