    nitrile group (–CN)

    The functional group present in nitriles (also known as cyanides). It consists of a carbon atom and a nitrogen atom joined by a triple covalent bond (–C≡N). The prefix cyano is used in chemical nomenclature to indicate the presence of a nitrile group in a molecule.
