ophthalmia

Inflammation of the eye. This may be conjunctivitis, as in neonatal ophthalmia (often gonococcal) or uveitis (or penophthalmitis) as in sympathetic ophthalmia. In this, an inflammatory reaction in both eyes follows injury to one. Infection may need antibiotics, while sympathetic ophthalmia may benefit from steroids.
