phobiaA neurosis characterized by exaggerated anxiety on confrontation with a specific object or situation, or the anxiety itself. Phobia is sometimes linked with obsessional neurosis, sometimes with hysteria; in each case the object of phobia is usually symbolic. Classic phobias are agoraphobia and claustrophobia.
