radiolarian
Any protozoan of the class Polycystinea (superclass Actinopoda). Radiolaria are found as zooplankton in the upper layers of all oceans. They are mostly spherically symmetrical and known for their tiny, complex, perforated skeletons, known as tests, which are usually composed of silica.
