rich cluster of galaxies



A cluster of galaxies with hundreds or thousands of large members (and many more smaller ones) within a reasonably compact region of space. The nearest rich cluster is the Virgo Cluster. Most of the richest clusters in the nearby universe are known as Abell clusters.
