SpaceDev, Inc
An aerospace company, founded in 1997 and based in Poway, California, which
is active in private spaceflight activities including small satellite construction,
hybrid propulsion system development, and reusable space vehicle design.
It provided key components and refueling services for the hybrid rocket
engine used by SpaceShipOne and built
CHIPSat for researchers at the University
of California at Berkeley. SpaceDev was also hoping to receive funding from
NASA to develop its concept for a small space plane called Dream
Chaser. However, NASA announced in 2006 that the companies selected
to receive the $500 million it was making available through its Commercial
Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) demonstration program were SpaceX
and Rocketplane Kistler.
